HISTORY

Highway and Safety Services was founded in 1987 by Patricia K. Diamondidis as a certified WBE specializing in Maintenance of Traffic and Sediment and Erosion Control. The first few years HSS was responding to requests from area Prime Contractors to help them fill the WBE/DBE goals on Federal, State, and Local public works contracts throughout the Maryland and DC area.  As a result, HSS grew in experience, size, and reputation.

During this time HSS expanded its activities to include installation of guardrail, fence, site furnishings, bus shelters, permanent roadway and garage signing, site plantings, landscaping and site excavation.  In 1992 HSS was awarded its first prime contract with the Maryland Aviation Administration at BWI and Martin State airports.  The work included the construction of an airfield, parking lot, asphalt and concrete patching and paving, site excavation, storm water management structures, storm drains, installation of site furnishings, etc.  The work was issued as task orders under the overall contract and involved a large amount of “designing” the repairs required by the Airport Authority.  Over the next 10 years HSS was awarded nine more contracts with MAA for all manner of repairs and construction at BWI and Martin State Airports. Concurrent with our involvement in these contracts HSS was continuing to expand as a Prime Contractor.  The nature of the work included the construction of roadways and parking areas, streetscapes, city parks, storm water facilities, stream valley restorations, truck wash buildings, concrete structures, landscaping, signing and site furnishings, a splash park, and innumerable site repairs.

HSS completed construction projects for other contracting agencies including Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority, Maryland Department of Transportation, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, Maryland National Park and Planning Commission, National Park Service, Housing and Opportunity Commission,  District of Columbia Department of Transportation, Virginia Department of Transportation,  Cities of Takoma Park, Gaithersburg, Rockville, Fairfax, Counties of Montgomery Department of General Services, Prince George’s Department of Public Works, Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works, Frederick County Department of Public Works, Carroll County Department of Public Works, Fairfax County Virginia Department of  Public Works.

In 2013 Highway and Safety Services, Inc. was acquired by AF Ventures.  Under this new ownership HSS is committed to continuing its current operations while expanding its range into vertical construction.
